I am very moved by this post, Pat. I have been a liberal democrat all my life. I have also been a person who respects and listens to those with different political views when they speak calmly and thoughtfully about their values and beliefs.

Serving as the Oregon Deputy Secretary of State under Barbara Roberts in the late 1980s, I developed a deep respect for her leadership abilities, her personal values, and her deep respect for all the people with whom she had contact, regardless of their political views. I was the treasurer of her campaign for Governor in 1989, and I joined her administration when she won the election.

Overall, my political experiences in Oregon were very positive. It was only toward the end of my service in government in 1994, that the politics began to get ugly. Instead of thoughtful discussion, there were more accusations and disrespect between Oregonians of different parties. That drove me out of politics…and today, the ugliness and disrespect in our politics is beyond description. What are we to do? I wish I knew.
